Intention...

The Conspire Project brings together diverse hearts, minds, perspectives, and creative mediums
to collectively envision, produce and present a memorial project that heals historical harm.

The Restorative Justice approach to group conflict emphasizes the need to attend to the historical harms informing contemporary injustices. One of the most well known examples of this is South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). Recognizing that no sector of South African society escaped impact of the violence and human rights abuses that occurred during apartheid, the TRC was created to acknowledge the harms that occurred and offer: those who inflicted harm an opportunity to take responsibility and make amends; those who were harmed an opportunity to have their experiences validated and resilience honored; bystanders a chance to express their regret at failing to prevent human rights violations; everyone a chance to demonstrate their commitment to reconciliation.

For this kind of work to be truly healing and transformative it warrants creative means by which to collectively: acknowledge the harms that occurred and their impact; hold themselves and each other accountable for their roles in maintaining the abusive system; honor the resiliency of those who endured; create a living memorial that makes sure future generations never forget or repeat the past; and demonstrate their commitment to building something new together. This can take the form of a community mural, documentary theater and/or film, interactive dance performance, victim-offender dialoguing curriculum...

Every one of us is impacting or impacted by every act of violence, oppression, war, natural disaster that happens in the world -- be it as a “victim”, “offender”, or bystander.  As such the Conspire Project brings together groups to build a living memorial that allows them to heal real issues of historical harm relevant to the collaborative team.
